Come join me at Lonaconing Silk Mill in western Maryland September 12, 2015 for a tour and workshop of this historic abandoned mill.


The Lonaconing Silk Mill, also referred to as the Klotz Throwing Company, is the last intact silk mill in the United States. It is located in Lonaconing, in western Maryland within the National Lonaconing Historic District and the site was nominated by the George’s Creek Watershed Association for the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

In this workshop, you will have four hours access to the mill, and I will be accessible to help you get better photos – I encourage you to come with questions. Learning to use a tripod, what camera settings to use, lighting with a flashlight, HDR (High Dynamic Range) methods, and much more. This workshop is limited to 16 participants. Details, maps, etc. will be sent out as the date approaches. You will be required to sign a waiver indicating you understand the risks associated with exploring the site – abandoned buildings can be dangerous! We need a minimum of 8 people to make this a go.

What to bring: Tripod, camera and manual, bottled water, sturdy shoes, flashlight.

We’ll meet at at the mill at about Noon; it’s a 2+ hour drive from DC.

The mill is not climate controlled; dress appropriately. There are also no facilities available.
