For roughly 35 years, Herb Crawford has been the owner of the Lonaconing Silk Mill in Western Maryland. It is the last intact silk mill in the United States. The mill has been subject to vandalism over the years, and the roof is in dire need of replacement. It is a unique part of American history that should be saved.
As Herb is aging and in need of funds, his wife, Betty, has developed Alzheimer’s and needs constant supervision. Herb is unable to tend the mill as he would like. Please help and consider making a donation at so this vital building can be restored. 
Take Back My Life is a campaign from the Frederick County Health Department aimed at expanding awareness of the deadly risks associated with prescription opioid and heroin misuse. These videos present real people in the Frederick area who have experienced opioid addiction—either their own or those of family members. After spending 6 weeks covering Hurricane Sandy, I was fortunate to meet a surviving family that was staying in my hotel.     I just spent the morning looking at your photographs of abandoned schools. I could not shake the feeling that I had once been in many of these empty spaces as a child, remembering them as they once were, freshly painted, thinking about all the hopeful children who have passed through.
